The Ultimate Guide to Preparing Your Home for Spring

Spring Cleaning is in the Air

The air is warming up and the birds are singing, spring is the time for new beginnings and fresh starts! This time of year, it’s a good idea to step out of your winter haze, do some cleaning, organizing, decluttering, and fixing!

The bustle of spring means soon, school will be out and the business of summer will start to set in, leaving less time for the extra work of cleaning the gutters, or fixing the fence. Get a jump start on the prep with this list of things you can do to prepare your home for this season.

Spoiler alert: there is a lot of cleaning involved.

Inside

Roll up your sleeves and let’s tackle some of the indoor chores.

Swap Out Seasonal Items

As winter fades away, leave the memories of chilly days behind! Put away the winter jackets, boots, and mittens and fill the closets with everyone’s spring and summer best!

Pack away any extra heavy blankets and bedding and pull out the lighter throws if you have them.

Next time you’re at the store, pick up a new candle that doesn’t smell like cinnamon or winter apple and opt for a spring scent to get yourself in the mood!

Replace Filters

Set yourself up for a clean-breathing season by changing your air filter. This is a great way to keep spring allergens out of the air in your home and cut down on the sniffles and itchy eyes.

If you have a hard time remembering to replace these filters every three months, consider joining an air filter program! The Quality Degree, Inc. team will automatically send you a new filter every few months so you don’t have to remember to pick one up at the store!

If you want to go even further with your air quality, check out our air quality services. Using an air humidifier, dehumidifier, air purifier, or a UV light system will improve indoor air quality and provide clean air for your family.

Clean!

We warned you there would be cleaning, and we weren’t kidding. We know it can be daunting to look at a list of all the things to clean, but take it one step at a time. Get the whole family involved and don’t try to accomplish everything in one day! Spreading it out over a week will make everyone less overwhelmed and more inclined to clean thoroughly.

That being said, here are some items that we recommend cleaning this spring that are often overlooked:

  • Walls, baseboards, and outlets
  • The oven and refrigerator
  • Faucets and showerheads
  • The dryer vent
  • Windowsills
  • All the floors
  • Bathroom tile (don’t forget to scrub the grout to prevent mold growth!)
  • Cupboards and cabinets

Keeping these surfaces free of excess dust and dirt will increase your indoor air quality, helping you breathe cleaner air.

HVAC

It’s time to take a look at your HVAC this spring. For an efficient season of cooling down the home, we highly recommend you schedule a tune-up appointment. During this appointment, one of our technicians will thoroughly clean, inspect, and fix your unit to ensure a smooth spring and summer.

We also suggest you lower your energy costs this season with a new digital thermostat! These thermostats allow you to schedule your thermostat to match your day. This way, it can automatically warm up the house during the day, and begin cooling as you’re on your way back home!

Outside

Now, let's take a look at what you can do outside of the home to prepare for this spring.

Fix it Up

Now is the perfect time to check off some items on your “to-fix” list. Replace the leaking gutter, the missing fence post, or repair your outdoor grill for future barbecues!

Prep The Garden

If you’ve got a green thumb, it’s time to put it to use once more! Head to the store and pick up the soil, seeds, and tools you need to create the garden of your dreams this year.

HVAC: Outdoor Unit

Don’t forget about your outdoor HVAC component! It’s likely that winter winds and weather have brought an accumulation of leaves, sticks, and dirt to the area. Clear these away and wipe off any excess dirt that has settled on the unit as this debris can slow it down and create an inefficient system that will work harder to cool you down, resulting in a higher utility bill!

At your maintenance appointment, your technician will be sure to inspect, clean, and repair any damage done to your outdoor component as well!
